The Club Finals 2023
A thrilling weekend of Club Bowls Finals. The green was excellently prepared by the green team. The Saturday weather was warm and sunny. The food was brilliant and of course the bar was fully open for two days. A big well done to all who contributed and we had wonderful spectators who knew about bowls and not to move when a player was on the mat ready to bowl. The weather on Sunday was dull and overcast but still reasonably warm. By mid afternoon however, the rain came so our championship finalists played in the rain. As bowlers do, we played on! The quality of the games and the bowling remained very high.

The Yardley Cup
On a rainy Monday afternoon 14 August, instead of the normal MALC, the ladies played in the Yardley Cup. There were 4 rinks with the overall winners being Jackie Nicholls, Pam Barker and Barbara Edlin. Despite the weather, we all had a smile on our faces and were glad to have a welcome cup of tea at the end.
On Saturday 26th August the Men won in the Jarvis Cup and the Potters Bar Ladies won in the Harvey Cup. The Men won with 8 points – Northaw and Cuffley and North Mymms each won only 2 points. The Ladies game was closer – Potters Bar won with 6 points and North Mymms had 5 points. Northaw and Cuffley had one point.
It is worth noting that one of our fours teams (Chris Budden, Barry Woodman, Richard Pearce and David Salmon) has reached the District Finals. We have a chance of having representation in the Men’s District Pairs, Triples and Fours finals.
The 2023 Tansey Final was played on 8th September between Gill & Barry Davidson and Kevin Patrick & Terry Harrison. Final score was 15-12 to Kevin and Terry.
Gill and Barry lost on the last end needing 2 shots (score after 14 ends was 14-12).

The last Bank Holiday spoon drive of the season on Monday 28th August saw 50 bowlers enjoy a sunny afternoon of bowling.
Well done to the winning rink of Martin Cross, Bernice Benson, Bill Burrows and Alan Oldham.
After the game bowlers and spectators enjoyed a cream tea.
The Potters Bar men won the Jarvis Cup in great style by winning every game. This is an annual three way competition between Potters Bar, Northaw and Cuffley and North Mymms Bowls Club. Following two trial ends we played games of 18 ends. Each club supplies four full rinks (teams) of players – so all six rinks at Northaw and Cuffley (hosts for the day) were in use. A group photo was taken after the game and hopefully you can pick out every player.
In the semi finals of the County Club Team Championship competition, on Sunday 6th August at Garston BC, we lost in the Semi Final against Garston BC. The final (on Sunday afternoon 6th August) was between Garston and Buntingford and Garston won. The Potters Bar men can be fairly proud of their performance in this competition. It is worth noting that Garston BC have now won the competition three years in a row (2021,2022 and 2023).
Lucy Thurlow recently raised £1250 towards the President’s Charity (CRY). Overall Barry has raised about £3000 for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). A photo of Lucy follows.

Re: District Finals:
What a great weekend – please see the pictures of the PB Winners – both the Men and the Ladies teams. Two victories for Potters Bar v WGC in the SADBA Finals at Harpenden (Harpenden were excellent hosts). In the SADBA Finals on Saturday the Potters Bar 4’s won an exciting game which stretched into the early evening. The sun shone and it was very warm. With the scores tied during the 17th end but with the Potters Bar team holding three shots the WGC skip consulted his team and made a fatal decision to bowl a heavy wood (almost firing) to try to reduce the impending deficit. Alas, he removed the only WGC wood from the head and as a result PB scored a 6! As you can imagine, it made the last end fairly easy but Richard Pearce (who bowled about 56 ends on Saturday!) was not content and drew the shot with his last wood. Earlier in the day the Potters Bar Friday Triples Teams also won an impressive game against WGC. On the rink skipped by David Sparrow it was nip and tuck for much of the game (with David playing excellently) and at the finish (from memory) PB won on that rink by 1 or 2 shots. On the neighbouring rink with Jan Southwell and David Arnold – skipped by Richard Pearce it was an equally tight game. Richard was excellent and on several occasions rescued the team from dropping shots. Eventually (again from memory) the PB team ran out winners by a margin of about 4 or 5 shots.
On Sunday 10th September it was the SADLBA Finals and PB were represented on three occasions. Diane (Jewell) and Jean (Scott) started the day very well in the Aussie Pairs with a convincing two set win over the finalists from Harperbury. Some excellently accurate bowling was supplied by both pairs but both Diane and Jean played very well as a team and were that bit more accurate on a green that required the ladies to push the bowl a lot harder than had been the experience for the men at Harpenden. The weather was again very hot and a little humid. SADLBA ran an excellent finals day.
Meanwhile the PB Double rink teams were playing the teams from Batchwood BC. On the rink skipped by Jean (with Penny, Brenda and Sue) they eventually lost on that rink by just one shot; but then played the extra end (needed in case of a tie on rinks) and Won the extra end! On the rink skipped by Ann Wood (with Gill, Julie and Di (Berry)) there was a convincing win for the PB team by a margin of about 11 shots. Excellent bowls were played by both PB teams.
